HIKING ON MOUNT ETNA
Rising up over the Island of Sicily, near the coast touching on the Messina Strait, Etna is the European Continent’s most active volcano, and one of the entire world’s biggest; now it has earned its stripes as an UNESCO World Heritage Site (June, 2013).
Etna represents a natural, terrestrial scientific laboratory, and its vulcanic zones and intense eruptions have been observed and talked about since Antiquity. Writings referring to Etna date as far back as 2,700 years ago, leading the UNESCO World Heritage Centre to declare it as “one of the most documented world records among Volcanoes.” THE WINE CELLARS OF ETNA Etna wines have a natural personality linked to native vines and the production area, and each side of the volcano, for different exposure, altitude and distance from the sea, has different effects on the vine and on the oenological product. Minerals, freshness and balanced alcoholicity, these are the characteristics of the wines produced in the area, whites with floral aromas, herbs and fruity hints, depending on the side, and the reds that differ in spicy or roasted notes.

ALCANTARA GORGES
Formed by runoff from Mount Etna and the Nebrodi Mountains, the Alcantara River is one of the few rivers on Sicily that runs year round. Several thousand years ago the rivers path was blocked by a large lava flow from the slopes of Mount Etna. The cool water of the river helped to quickly cool the lava, which resulted in the lava crystallizing and forming the unique ballast rock columns that are visible today. Over the next few thousand years the river proceeded to carve a path through the columns resulting in the gorge that visitors see today.
